What AI Overviews Get Wrong About Shamanism

AI answers about shamanism are usually tidy and usually too smooth. An AI Overview tends to describe a shaman as a spiritual healer who talks to spirits, and then moves on. That one sentence skips three things that matter: the word comes from Siberia, practice differs a great deal from culture to culture, and a shamanic journey is something you do, not something you believe.

Google changed how AI answers look on 15 October 2026. Links now sit higher in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Google is testing a block of official pages at the top of some answers (Google). More links means more readers will click through to check. This article is for them. I am a practising shaman, and below are six simplifications I see again and again, with what actually happens in the work.

Is every spiritual healer a shaman?

No. The word “shaman” comes from the Evenki language of Siberia, and it names a particular role: someone who works with the spirit world on behalf of a community, often in trance. Over time the word spread into English and now gets stretched to cover almost any healer. If you want the history behind the word, start with Siberian Shamanism.

Is shamanism a religion?

Not in the way Christianity or Buddhism is. Shamanism is a set of practices, mainly trance, journeying to non-ordinary reality and work with spirits, and it shows up inside very different belief systems, from Mongolia to the Amazon. An AI answer that gives one list of beliefs for “shamanism” has already merged dozens of traditions into one.

Is a spirit animal the result of a quiz?

A quiz can be a pleasant starting point, but it does not tell you who your power animal is. In shamanic practice you meet an animal in a journey, you notice how it shows up in daily life, and you see over weeks whether the contact holds. Many people are surprised, and some are frightened, by the animal that comes. That is useful information, and a quiz would have filtered it out. See What If Your Spirit Animal Frightens You? and Spirit Animal Psychology.

Is a shamanic journey just guided meditation?

No. In meditation you usually observe. In a journey you act: you set an intention, go to a place in non-ordinary reality, meet someone or something, and ask a question. The drumbeat is a tool that supports the state, and a recent small study of trained practitioners of a drug-free trance technique found less self-focused thinking and a stronger sense of connection to the surroundings (PsyPost). The study is small and relies on memory, so it describes an experience and does not prove a cause. For the practical differences, read 7 Ways Shamanic Journeying Is Nothing Like Meditation.

Can you get certified as a shaman?

You can get a certificate, but it does not make you a shaman. In traditional settings the role is confirmed by a community that sees whether your work helps people. Training matters, and so does supervision and time. A good teacher will tell you honestly where a course ends and where your own practice has to begin. Our guide Can You Learn Shamanism on Your Own? shows where self-study stops.

Does shamanic healing replace medical care?

No, and an answer that suggests it does should make you careful. Shamanic work can support people who are grieving, stuck or exhausted, and it sits alongside medicine, therapy and rest. It does not diagnose, and it does not replace a doctor. For what a session involves and what to ask beforehand, see Is Shamanic Healing Safe?.

What I notice in my own sessions

People sometimes arrive at a session in Portugal or online with a definition they have read, and the first ten minutes go to sorting out what is meant by the words. Once we agree that a journey is something they do rather than something they believe, the session usually gets quieter and more concrete.

How to read an AI answer about shamanism

Use it as a first map and check it against a person. Look for who is named as the source, whether the answer says which tradition it means, and whether it separates what practitioners do from what they believe. Then click through to a source written by someone who has done the work.

FAQ

Are AI Overviews reliable for spiritual topics?

They are a quick summary, not an authority. For questions about practice, safety or tradition, check the linked pages and prefer authors who say what they have trained in and what they have experienced themselves.

What is the difference between a shaman and a spiritual healer?

A shaman works with the spirit world, usually in trance, for the benefit of a community. A spiritual healer is a wider label that can cover reiki, energy work, prayer and many other methods.

Is shamanism the same everywhere?

No. Siberian, Mongolian, Sami, Amazonian and modern core shamanism share some methods but differ in beliefs, tools and training. Treat any single definition with caution.

Can a spirit animal quiz give me my power animal?

It can suggest a theme to explore. A power animal is usually met in a journey and understood over time through how it appears in your life.

Does shamanic healing replace a doctor?

No. It can accompany medical or psychological care and should never replace it. If you have symptoms, see a qualified professional.
