The short answer: the best shamanism app depends on what you practise. For drum journeys, Drum Journey is a reliable timer app that’s still being updated, and Insight Timer has a large free library of drumming tracks. For daily spirit animal work with practices and a private journal, The Path of the Paws is the most complete. For oracle cards, Shamanic Oracle Cards is the best-rated choice. I checked all seven apps in the stores on 2 November 2026.
One app on this list is my own. I’m telling you at the start so you can weigh the list for yourself. I’ve still described the others the way I’d describe them to a student: what they do well, and what’s missing.

How I judged them
A shamanism app won’t replace a teacher or a circle. What it can do is help you keep practising. So I looked at four things: does the app support real practice, such as a drum journey, spirit animal work or reflection? Is it still maintained? What does it really cost? And what happens to what you write in it?
Upkeep matters more than you’d think. Several well-known drumming apps haven’t been updated for years. They often still open, but on a new phone that can stop at any time.
1. The Path of the Paws: a spirit animal for every day
This is my app, and it grew out of my oracle deck. Every morning a spirit animal arrives with its image, keywords and a message. Each of the more than 70 animals comes with eight practices: guided meditation, shamanic drum journey, affirmation, breathing exercise, NLP coaching question, journal prompt, mindfulness exercise and shamanic dream interpretation. You also find your seven inner spirit animals, a moon calendar and a journal that stays on your phone.
- Strength: the only app here that brings the daily animal, a practice and a journal together. No account, no tracking, everything works offline, and it’s available in English and German.
- Limitation: it’s not a pure drumming timer. If all you want is a long drum journey you can set to the minute, Drum Journey suits you better. The moon calendar and the full journal archive need Premium.
- Price: free. Premium is €4.99 a month, €39.99 a year (with 7 days free) or €129.99 once.
You can see screenshots and every detail on the spirit animal app page. Download: App Store and Google Play.
2. Drum Journey: the best drum journey timer
Drum Journey is just a timer for your journey, and a good one. You set the length, from 5 minutes to an hour, and choose a single drum, a double drum or a drum with rattle. You can adjust tempo and volume and add your own drum recordings. It’s still being updated, the latest version came out in early November 2026, and it holds 4.7 stars from 89 ratings in the US store. Drum Journey in the App Store
- Strength: a dedicated journey timer with no subscription.
- Limitation: iPhone only, and it doesn’t teach you how to journey. It assumes you already know.
3. Insight Timer: a large free library of drumming
Insight Timer is a general meditation app, but it holds a large collection of shamanic drumming tracks from many different teachers, including journeys with a callback and recordings of up to three hours. Shamanic drumming on Insight Timer
- Strength: a huge choice, most of it free.
- Limitation: quality depends on who uploaded the track, and there’s no shamanic framework around it. You do the sorting yourself.
4. Shamanic Oracle Cards: the best-rated card app
This app brings three oracle decks to your phone, among them a 48-card spirit animal deck. You draw one, three or five cards and keep your readings in a journal. With 4.8 stars from more than 950 ratings, it’s the best-rated card app here. Shamanic Oracle Cards in the App Store
- Strength: well made and kept up to date, and you can try it free for 7 days.
- Limitation: a card app, not a journeying app. Each deck costs $9.99, and there are optional credit packs on top.
5. Shaman Spirit: community and live ceremonies
Shaman Spirit is more of a meeting place than a tool. There are drum journeys, but it’s mainly about live virtual fire ceremonies, events, a community and courses. It’s free. The Android version was last updated in 2025, the iPhone version in November 2024. App Store and Google Play
- Strength: community and live offerings, not just audio.
- Limitation: hardly any ratings so far, and without the live dates there isn’t much left.
6. Spirit Animal Power: a power animal journey as hypnosis
This app comes from a hypnosis series. A voice guides you to your power animal, and there’s also a version with drum only. It’s well rated and was updated in 2025. Spirit Animal Power in the App Store
- Strength: the drum-only version is a good first step for beginners.
- Limitation: the frame is hypnosis, not a shamanic tradition, and Premium ($12.99 a month or $79.99 a year) covers a whole bundle of hypnosis apps.
7. Shaman World: free, but uncertain
Shaman World gathers articles, a podcast, videos, drumming tracks and meditations from a practitioner in Maine, all free. Shaman World app page
- Strength: learning material and drumming in one place, at no cost.
- Limitation: no ratings and no visible update date. I couldn’t tell whether it’s still maintained.
Apps I would no longer recommend
Shamanic Journey Drumming was last updated in 2017, Shaman Magic in 2021. They might still run, but on a current phone that’s down to luck.
What to watch for when you journey with an app
An app doesn’t replace the way you hold a journey. Here’s what has worked in my courses:
- Headphones and flight mode. A notification halfway through pulls you straight out.
- A callback. Make sure the drum changes its rhythm at the end, so you know when to return.
- A clear question first. Without an intention, a journey easily turns into a daydream.
- Write it down afterwards. What you don’t note is often gone within the hour.
If your journeys stay dark and empty, read why you see nothing on a shamanic journey. And the A to Z spirit animal guide tells you what the animal you met stands for.
Questions about shamanism apps
Can I do a shamanic journey with an app?
Yes. A drum from your phone works just as well as any recording, as long as the beat stays steady. For your first journeys a guide still helps, otherwise you don’t know where you’re going or how to come back.
What is the best free shamanism app?
For drumming tracks, Insight Timer. For daily spirit animal work, The Path of the Paws. Both are free to use at their core.
Is there a spirit animal app without an account?
Yes. The Path of the Paws needs no account and no email address, and your journal stays on your device.
Can an app replace shamanic training?
No. An app helps you practise regularly. Making sense of what you meet on a journey, and working with it safely, is best learned with a teacher and a group.
As of 2 November 2026. Prices, ratings and update dates come from the Apple App Store and Google Play. They change, so please check them in the store before you buy. I haven’t been paid by any of the other apps.
