The Shamanic View of Illness: Spirit, Energy and Body

The shamanic view of illness understands sickness as a message rather than an accident: when body, energy and soul fall out of balance, the body speaks. In shamanic cultures across the world, a symptom is read as a signal that something has been lost, something foreign has settled in, or a relationship has gone quiet. This does not replace a diagnosis. It sits beside one, and it asks a different question: not only what is broken, but what is out of place.

I have sat with people who had every test done and every result come back clean, and who still knew that something was wrong. The shamanic lens gave them language for that. Here is what that lens actually looks like, where it helps, and where it has no business being.

What is the shamanic view of illness?

The shamanic view of illness holds that every physical or emotional symptom has a spiritual dimension alongside its physical one. Healing therefore works on three layers at once: the body, the energy field around and within it, and the soul. A shamanic practitioner does not ask what disease you have. They ask when you last felt whole, and what happened in the time between.

Mircea Eliade, who documented shamanic practice across dozens of cultures in Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy, found the same basic answer to what is a shaman almost everywhere: the healer travels to the spirit world to find out what happened, and then acts on what they learn. Michael Harner, who later distilled these shared methods into what he called core shamanism, described the same three classic causes of sickness that traditional healers named long before him.

What causes illness according to shamanic tradition?

Shamanic traditions name three recurring causes: soul loss, power loss, and intrusion. Each one has its own signature, and each one has its own healing method. Most people who come to a session carry a mixture of at least two.

CauseWhat happensHow it often feelsClassic response
Soul lossA part of the life force steps away to survive something overwhelmingNumbness, gaps in memory, feeling that a piece of you is missing since a certain yearSoul retrieval
Power lossThe protective connection to your helping spirits thins outChronic low energy, bad luck in clusters, catching every infection going aroundPower animal retrieval
IntrusionEnergy that does not belong to you settles in a place in the bodyLocalised pain or heaviness with no medical explanation, often after conflictExtraction
Broken relationshipThe tie to ancestors, land or community has gone quietRootlessness, repeating family patterns, a sense of not belonging anywhereAncestral work, ceremony, offerings

You can read about two of these in more depth: what power loss is and how it is healed, and how shamanic extraction removes what does not belong.

How does the shamanic view differ from the medical one?

Medicine asks what is happening in the tissue. Shamanism asks what is happening in the story. The two are not rivals, they are looking at different layers of the same person, and a good practitioner in either field will tell you so.

Does shamanism say illness is your own fault?

No, and this is the single most important correction to make. The shamanic view of illness is not the idea that you manifested your cancer or attracted your autoimmune disease with the wrong thoughts. That belief causes real harm, and it is not what traditional shamanic cultures taught.

Soul loss is a survival mechanism. It happens because something was too big to bear, not because you were spiritually careless. Power loss usually follows years of giving more than you had. Intrusion often arrives through other people’s anger. None of these are moral failures. They are wounds, and wounds are tended, not judged.

What does a shamanic approach to illness look like in practice?

In practice it is quieter and more ordinary than most people expect. There is a conversation, a journey with the drum, and then a short piece of work that follows whatever the journey showed. Afterwards there is integration, which is where the real change usually happens.

  1. Listening. What began when, and what was happening in your life at that time.
  2. Journeying. The practitioner travels with the drum to ask the helping spirits what is going on and what is needed.
  3. The work itself. A soul retrieval, an extraction, a power animal retrieval, or sometimes only a message.
  4. Feedback. You hear exactly what was seen and done, in plain words, with nothing withheld.
  5. Integration. Simple practices for the following weeks so the change settles into daily life.

If you want to see how that is structured as actual sessions, the shamanic healing sessions page describes each type of work, what it costs, and how distance healing is handled.

Where are the limits of the shamanic view of illness?

The limits are firm and worth naming clearly. Shamanic work does not diagnose. It does not treat infection, set bones, manage blood pressure, or replace medication, therapy or surgery. A practitioner who tells you to stop your treatment is not practising shamanism, they are being dangerous.

Shamanic healing is complementary work. It sits alongside medical and psychological care and supports the part that medicine does not claim: meaning, belonging, the sense of being whole again. If you are ill, please see a doctor. Then, if you want, bring the other layer in as well. In acute mental health crises, professional support comes first, always.

How can you start working with this view yourself?

Start by changing the question you ask your body. Instead of what is wrong with me, try what is this asking of me. Then keep notes for a few weeks: when symptoms rise, what happened the day before, who you were with, what you said yes to that you meant as no.

Most people find a pattern within a month. That pattern is the doorway. If you want to explore it with your own helping spirits rather than through someone else, learning to journey is the next step, and the One Shamanism community is where that learning happens alongside other people walking the same road.

Frequently asked questions

Can shamanic healing cure a physical disease?

No. Shamanic healing is complementary work that addresses the energetic and soul layers of illness. It does not cure disease and it never replaces medical treatment. Many people experience more calm, more energy and a clearer sense of meaning, which can support a medical process, but the medicine remains the medicine.

What is soul loss in simple terms?

Soul loss is when a part of your life force steps away during something overwhelming, so that you can survive it. Typical signs are numbness, gaps in memory around a certain period, and the persistent feeling that a piece of you has been missing since a particular year. Soul retrieval is the practice of bringing that part home.

Do I have to believe in spirits for this to work?

No. Belief is not a requirement, openness is enough. Many people come in sceptical and simply observe what happens in their own body and mood over the following weeks. What matters is that you go in honestly rather than trying to convince yourself of anything.

Is the shamanic view of illness the same as manifesting?

No. Manifesting suggests your thoughts create your circumstances, which easily turns into blaming sick people for being sick. The shamanic view sees illness as a signal of imbalance, often caused by things that happened to you and were beyond your control. It looks for causes, not for fault.

How many sessions does shamanic healing usually take?

Most focused pieces of work take between one and five sessions, depending on what the journey shows. A single extraction can be complete in one meeting, while soul retrieval and ancestral work are usually spread across several so that there is room to integrate between them.

Can shamanic work be done at a distance?

Yes. The practitioner journeys on your behalf while you rest at home, and you receive the work and a full report afterwards. In shamanic understanding the spirit world is not bound by physical distance, which is why distance healing has been part of the tradition long before it became practical for online sessions.

Important note: shamanic work complements medical and psychological treatment. It does not replace it, and it is not a diagnosis. If you have symptoms, please consult a doctor or therapist. In an acute crisis, seek professional help first.
