What Is Power Loss in Shamanism and How Is It Healed?

Power loss in shamanism is the gradual draining of a person’s life force, the vital energy that shamanic cultures understand as the ground of health, courage and immunity. It is not a moral failing and not a diagnosis. It is a description of what happens when someone has been frightened, overworked, grieving or unprotected for long enough that their vitality thins out. In traditional shamanic understanding, a person with intact power feels resilient, curious and hard to knock over. A person in power loss feels flat, accident prone and strangely defenceless, even when nothing in their life looks obviously wrong.

I have sat with many people who arrive at a session apologising for not having a real problem. Nothing dramatic happened. They just cannot find themselves anymore. That sentence, more than any symptom list, is what power loss sounds like from the inside.

What Does Power Loss Actually Mean in Shamanism?

Power loss means that a person’s protective, animating energy has been depleted or has withdrawn, leaving them vulnerable to illness, misfortune and emotional collapse. Michael Harner, the anthropologist who brought core shamanism to a Western audience, described the shamanic view plainly: someone who has lost their power is spiritually unprotected, and that lack of protection tends to show up as a run of bad luck, chronic illness or depression.

Shamanic cultures across Siberia, the Andes and the Amazon share a working assumption here, even though the words differ. Power is not something you own permanently. It is a relationship. It flows through you as long as you stay connected to the living world, to your helping spirits, to your body, and to the people who love you. Cut enough of those connections and the flow slows to a trickle.

Three things are worth naming before we go further. Power loss is not possession. It is not punishment. And it is not a substitute for a medical explanation. If you are exhausted, please have a doctor rule out the ordinary causes first. Shamanic work sits alongside medicine and therapy. It does not replace either.

What Causes Power Loss?

Power loss is usually caused by a long stretch of fear, boundary erosion, grief or disconnection from nature, rather than by a single dramatic event. Soul loss tends to have a moment you can point to. Power loss tends to have a season.

  • Prolonged fear. A body that has been braced for months stops replenishing anything.
  • Boundary erosion. Saying yes past your limit, over and over, until your energy belongs to everyone but you.
  • Unmetabolised grief. Loss that was never given time or ceremony.
  • Disconnection from the living world. Weeks indoors, screens instead of weather, no soil under your hands.
  • Neglecting your helping spirits. A power animal you stopped visiting years ago, a practice you let fall away.
  • Environments that drain you. Workplaces, relationships or online spaces where you leave smaller than you arrived.

What Are the Signs of Power Loss?

The clearest signs of power loss are chronic low energy that sleep does not fix, a pattern of minor illnesses and accidents, dulled emotion and the sense of being easily overwhelmed by other people. The table below sorts the most common signs by the level where they show up, which also tells you where the work needs to begin.

LevelHow power loss shows upWhat it is often mistaken for
BodyPersistent tiredness, recurring infections, small accidents, slow healingPoor sleep hygiene, bad luck, ageing
EmotionFlatness, low motivation, tearfulness without a cause, irritabilityMild depression, burnout, a difficult phase
MindFoggy thinking, indecision, ruminating on the same worryOverwork, too much screen time
Energy fieldAbsorbing other people’s moods, feeling porous in crowds, dread before contactBeing highly sensitive, introversion
SpiritNo sense of direction, journeys that go nowhere, feeling unaccompaniedA spiritual dry spell, losing faith

One or two of these on their own mean very little. It is the pattern, held over months, that points to power loss. And because so many of these signs overlap with depression, thyroid conditions, anaemia and burnout, the honest order is always medical first, shamanic alongside.

How Is Power Loss Different From Soul Loss?

Power loss is a depletion of vital energy, while soul loss is the departure of a specific part of the self after trauma. The two often travel together, but they need different medicine.

If the second column describes you better, start with what soul retrieval can and cannot do before booking anything.

How Is Power Loss Healed?

Power loss is healed primarily through a power animal retrieval, a shamanic journey in which the practitioner travels on your behalf, finds a helping spirit in animal form that is willing to work with you, and returns that power to your body. The traditional method is simple and old: the practitioner journeys with the drum, meets the animal, brings it back and blows the energy into your chest and the crown of your head.

A typical process looks like this.

  1. Conversation and discernment. What has been happening, how long, and what else is already being treated medically.
  2. Clearing first if needed. Sometimes an extraction comes before a retrieval, because power will not stay in a body that is still holding something intrusive.
  3. The retrieval journey. Drum, darkness, and the practitioner journeying on your behalf while you rest.
  4. The return. The power is blown back into you, and you are told what came and what it showed.
  5. Integration. Four weeks of dancing, honouring or simply speaking to the animal, so the relationship becomes real rather than a nice story.

The retrieval itself often takes fifteen minutes. The integration is what decides whether anything holds. If you want to understand the guide that arrives, read the difference between a spirit animal and a power animal, because they are not the same relationship.

What Can You Do for Yourself?

You can rebuild a meaningful amount of power on your own through daily practices that restore connection to your body, the natural world and your helping spirits. Not everything requires a practitioner.

  • Dance your animal. Five minutes, one piece of music, moving the way that animal moves. This is the oldest power practice there is and it is not optional if you want the relationship to hold.
  • Go outside without a purpose. Twenty minutes with weather on your skin and no phone in your hand.
  • Say one honest no per week. Boundaries are power practice disguised as admin.
  • Close your field at the end of the day. A short washing, smoke or breath ritual that marks the day as finished.
  • Grieve what you skipped. Light a candle, name the loss out loud, sit with it for ten minutes.

If you have been running on empty for years, self practice will lift you but rarely all the way. That is the point at which a shamanic healing session makes sense, and it is also where shamanic healing for burnout overlaps almost entirely with this work.

From My Own Practice

Years ago I went through a stretch where nothing was wrong and everything was grey. I was teaching, I was well, I was loved. I also could not remember the last time I had wanted anything. I kept looking for the trauma, the moment, the story that would explain it. There wasn’t one. What there was, when I finally sat down with the drum, was a long slow leak: two years of saying yes, a grief I had scheduled around, and a power animal I had not spoken to since a course had ended.

The retrieval took a quarter of an hour. What actually changed things was the month afterwards, dancing badly in my kitchen every morning, feeling ridiculous, and then one day not feeling ridiculous. Power does not come back because someone gives it to you. It comes back because you start living as though you have some.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I have power loss or just burnout?

You often have both. Burnout is the clinical description of the same exhaustion that shamanic cultures call power loss, and the two overlap heavily. The practical difference is that burnout responds to rest and workload change, while power loss tends to persist even after a long holiday. If you have rested properly and still feel hollow and unprotected, the shamanic framing may add something. Have burnout assessed medically either way.

Can power loss cause physical illness?

In the shamanic view, yes: lost power leaves a person unprotected, and illness is understood as one of the things that can then move in. This is a spiritual model, not a medical one. Physical symptoms always deserve a physical investigation first. Shamanic work is complementary and should never delay diagnosis or treatment.

Can I retrieve my own power animal?

You can journey to meet a power animal yourself, and many people do. Traditionally, though, retrieval for someone in deep power loss is done by another person, precisely because someone whose energy is depleted often cannot hold a journey steadily enough to bring anything back. Meeting is something you can do alone. Retrieval, in a serious depletion, is usually done for you.

How long does it take to recover from power loss?

Most people notice a shift within days of a retrieval, and a durable change over four to eight weeks of daily practice. The retrieval opens the door. The month afterwards is what keeps it open. Where the underlying drain is still in place, an unchanged job or relationship, the recovery stalls until that is addressed.

Can power loss come back?

Yes. Power is a relationship, not a possession, so it thins again whenever the conditions that drained it return. This is not failure. It is why shamanic traditions treat power practice as daily maintenance rather than a one time repair.

Is a power animal retrieval safe?

A retrieval with a trained practitioner is a gentle, non invasive process. You rest, you breathe, nothing is done to your body beyond breath on your chest. The care lies in the discernment beforehand and the integration afterwards. If you are in acute mental health crisis, work with a therapist or doctor first and bring shamanic work in later, alongside.
