Shamanism & the Connection to the Green Tara as a Powerful Ally

In shamanic work, the connection to spirits, ancestors, or divine beings is a central element. These spiritual companions support us in experiencing healing, awakening inner wisdom, and living in harmony with the natural world. Every culture has its own spirits and rituals, but the fundamental principle always remains the same: Through conscious contact and ceremonies, we connect with a higher power that accompanies and protects us on our path.

The Green Tara, an enlightened female deity from Tibetan Buddhism, can be seen in this context as a powerful spiritual ally. She embodies compassion, healing, and protection and is a healing force that supports us on our life journey. Like shamanic spirits, she invites us to consciously connect with her in order to experience inner transformation and spiritual strengthening.

The Green Tara – Compassion & Healing

The Green Tara is one of the best-known female deities in Tibetan Buddhism and represents compassion, protection, and healing. Her name “Tara” means “Savior” or “Liberator,” and the color green symbolizes life, growth, and the power of nature. The Green Tara is often invoked to overcome fears, promote healing, and support the path to enlightenment.

In spiritual practice, connecting with the Green Tara is a way to access these qualities within ourselves. Through meditation, visualization, and mantra recitation, we can connect with her healing energy and cultivate inner peace and courage.

The Green Tara is often depicted as a beautiful, graceful figure. In her left hand, she holds a lotus flower—a symbol of purity, awakening, and compassion—which is in full bloom and radiates light. Her right hand displays a mudra, a symbolic hand gesture that grants protection and blessings while expressing courage and care. She wears ornate Golluns earrings, which emphasize her noble origin and spiritual wisdom. Delicate bracelets adorn her wrists, symbolizing the connection to the elements and the flow of energy. Her legs are wrapped in colorful rainbow leggings that reflect the diversity and beauty of life as well as the all-encompassing power of nature.

Green Tara – The Guiding Star Goddess and Shamanic Protector

The name “Tara” literally means “Venus” or “Guiding Star” — a source of light that shows the way. In different cultures, she appears under various names: As “Tara Delhi,” she is regarded as a great mother figure (“Big Mama”), a female counterpart of Tengriism, the ancient religion of the sky gods, and is revered as the female goddess of the unchanging sky. Originally worshiped as a Bengali Hindu goddess, the Green Tara was later introduced to Tibet — a land with deeply rooted shamanic traditions.

In Tibet, shamanism is the original spiritual foundation; many Buddhist teachings and symbols are essentially “burned” or derived from this shamanic culture. At first, Buddhist movements tried to suppress the local shamanic community, but over time, cooperation and mutual influence between shamanism and Buddhism developed. The Green Tara is closely linked to the “Dark Head” lineage, whose guardian Amenaa is regarded as a powerful bearer of this spiritual wisdom.

Tara herself is a Tenger — a sky goddess who protects us from the eight great fears and brings healing. She symbolizes protection, guidance, and the unshakable power of the sky amid earthly challenges.

Ritual to Connect with the Green Tara

  1. Close your eyes and enter meditation.
Let your body and mind settle, breathe deeply and evenly.
  2. Visualize the Green Tara before you.
Imagine the Green Tara with her radiant green aura and loving gaze in your mind’s eye.
  3. Invite her to become one with you through your crown chakra.
Open your crown chakra (the top of your head) and invite the energy of the Green Tara to penetrate and merge with you.
  4. Be the Green Tara.
Feel her healing power flowing through you, and sense yourself as an expression of compassion and protection.
  5. Recite the mantra.
Slowly and mindfully recite the mantra: “Om Tare Tuttare Ture Soha.” It’s best to use a mala to count repetitions and enter a meditative rhythm.
  6. Focus on your breath.
Breathe deeply and receive the healing energy. Exhale and release fear, pain, and blockages.
  7. Remain in silence.
Feel the connection to the Green Tara in the stillness after the mantra meditation.
  8. Express gratitude.
Thank her for her presence, protection, and guidance.
  9. Gently end the meditation.
Breathe consciously, slowly open your eyes, and bring the calm, healing energy into your daily life.

This short but beautiful ritual helps you activate the qualities of the Green Tara in your life and experience spiritual support — fully in the spirit of shamanic traditions that honor opening up to special spirits and divine helpers.
