Power Animal Retrieval: What It Is and When You Need It

A power animal retrieval is a shamanic healing session in which a practitioner journeys on your behalf to find a helping spirit in animal form and bring it back to you. It is one of the oldest and simplest pieces of shamanic work, and in many traditions it is the first thing done for someone who arrives depleted, unlucky, or strangely unprotected. You do not need to believe anything in particular for it to be offered to you. You only need to be missing something.

Below is what actually happens in a retrieval, the signs that point towards needing one, how it differs from a soul retrieval, and what the weeks afterwards ask of you.

What is a power animal retrieval?

A power animal retrieval is a session in which the practitioner enters a drum-induced journey, asks for a helping spirit willing to work with you, and returns that spirit to your body and energy field. The whole thing usually takes fifteen to twenty minutes of journeying inside a session of sixty to ninety minutes. The practitioner then tells you which animal came, what it showed, and what it asks of you.

The animal is not a symbol you chose and not a personality type. In shamanic terms it is a being that agrees to lend you its qualities and its protection. Michael Harner, who gathered these methods into what is now taught as core shamanism, described power animal retrieval as basic first aid in the shamanic toolkit. That is a fair way to hold it. It is not exotic, it is foundational.

Why would you need one?

You would need a power animal retrieval when your life force has thinned out and ordinary rest is not restoring it. In shamanic language this is called power loss, and it is the most common condition practitioners see. A person with intact power tends to be resilient, warm, reasonably lucky, and hard to knock over. A person in power loss is none of those things, and usually cannot explain why.

Power leaks slowly. A long illness, years of caretaking, a relationship that took more than it gave, a job that required you to be someone else, a grief you had no time for. None of these are dramatic on their own. Together they leave a person running on very little. If you want the fuller picture of the condition itself, what power loss is and how it is healed goes into it in depth.

What are the signs you might need a power animal retrieval?

The signs of power loss are ordinary enough that most people explain them away for years. None of them is proof on its own. Several of them together, lasting for months, is worth taking seriously.

  • Chronic tiredness that sleep does not touch.
  • A run of bad luck that starts to feel less like coincidence.
  • Getting every cold that passes through the house.
  • Feeling unprotected in crowds, or drained after ordinary contact with people.
  • A sense that you have gone grey or flat, without being depressed in any clinical sense.
  • Difficulty defending yourself, physically or in conversation, when you used to manage it easily.
  • Recurring accidents, small injuries, things breaking around you.
  • Losing interest in things that reliably used to light you up.

A word of care here. Persistent exhaustion, low mood and frequent infection all have medical and psychological causes that deserve proper investigation. Shamanic work sits alongside that, never instead of it. A good practitioner will say so before you book.

How is it different from a soul retrieval?

They answer two different questions. A soul retrieval brings back a part of you that left. A power animal retrieval brings you an ally that was never you in the first place. The table below lays the two side by side.

Question Power animal retrieval Soul retrieval
What is returned A helping spirit, an ally from outside you A part of your own soul that split off
Underlying condition Power loss: thinned life force, no protection Soul loss: a piece of you left during trauma
Typical trigger Long depletion, caretaking, chronic stress A specific shock, trauma or overwhelming event
How it feels after Warmth, energy, a sense of company Memory, emotion, sometimes grief surfacing
Integration needed Weeks of relationship building Months of gentle processing
Usual order Often done first, to build capacity Often done after power is restored

This is why experienced practitioners frequently start with the retrieval of a power animal even when a client came asking for soul work. You need power before you can hold what soul retrieval brings back. Doing it the other way round tends to overwhelm people.

What happens in the session, step by step?

A power animal retrieval follows a recognisable shape whether it happens in a room or over video. Nothing is done to you that you have not agreed to, and you stay awake throughout.

  1. Conversation first. You describe what has been happening. The practitioner listens for signs of power loss and names what they are hearing.
  2. Permission and intention. Nothing is retrieved without your consent. The intention is spoken out loud so you both know what is being asked for.
  3. You lie down. Usually on your back, eyes closed, covered with a blanket. Your only job is to rest.
  4. The journey. The practitioner drums or uses recorded drumming and journeys, most often to the lower world, to look for an animal willing to come.
  5. The return. The animal is brought back and blown into your chest and the crown of your head. Many people feel a wave of warmth, or a strong urge to cry, or nothing at all. All three are fine.
  6. The telling. The practitioner tells you which animal came and what it showed them. They do not interpret your life for you. They report.
  7. What now. You agree on how you will honour the animal in the next weeks. This part is not optional, and it is the part that decides whether the retrieval holds.

If you have never sat in a session of any kind, the practical side of arriving and what to bring is covered on the shamanic healing sessions page.

What does the animal that comes actually mean?

The animal that comes is the one willing to work with you now, not the one you would have picked. This disappoints a lot of people, and it is one of the most useful things about the practice.

People arrive hoping for a wolf or an eagle and receive a mole, a domestic goose, a snail. The teaching is almost always in the mismatch. The mole digs in the dark and does not need to see the whole tunnel. The goose is loud, territorial and fiercely loyal to its own. The snail carries its home and cannot be hurried. If you had chosen for yourself, you would have chosen the quality you already have. The spirits tend to send what is missing.

A retrieval also tells you nothing about your worth. There are no high-ranking and low-ranking animals, whatever the internet suggests. There is only the animal that showed up for you.

What do you do in the weeks afterwards?

A retrieved power animal stays as long as the relationship is tended, and leaves quietly when it is ignored. The traditional instruction is simple: honour the animal, and dance it. That means give it regular attention and let it move through your body sometimes.

  • The first days: rest more than seems reasonable. Keep plans light. Note what your energy does.
  • Every day, briefly: greet the animal. Thirty seconds is enough. Attention is the currency here.
  • Once a week: move like it, alone, to music or drumming. This feels ridiculous and it works.
  • Ongoing: learn the actual creature. Where it lives, what it eats, how it survives winter. Real knowledge deepens the relationship.
  • When you need it: ask for the quality it carries before a difficult conversation, and thank it afterwards.

This is ordinary, undramatic work, and it is where the session becomes a change in your life rather than an interesting afternoon. If you want a longer set of practices, how to connect with your power animal in daily life lays out a four week rhythm.

Can you retrieve a power animal for yourself?

You can journey to meet a power animal yourself, and many practitioners teach exactly that. What is harder to do alone is a retrieval in the strict sense, performed when you are in real power loss. Depletion is the condition that makes journeying least reliable, which is the awkward part: the moment you most need power returned is the moment you are least able to fetch it.

So the honest division is this. If you are tired but functioning, journeying to meet an ally yourself is good work and entirely yours to do. If you have been running on empty for a year and cannot get a clear image in a journey any more, that is what a practitioner is for.

How often do you need one?

Once is usually enough for a long time. A retrieved animal is not a prescription that runs out. People sometimes come back after a major life change, a serious illness, or a long period where they know they let the relationship lapse, and receive a second animal or the same one again. That may be a gap of years.

If a practitioner suggests you need a monthly retrieval, be careful. That is not how this works. The rhythm question more broadly is covered in how often you should have a shamanic healing.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a power animal retrieval take?

The journey itself usually takes fifteen to twenty minutes. The full session, including the conversation before and the telling afterwards, generally runs sixty to ninety minutes.

Does a power animal retrieval work over video?

Yes. In shamanic understanding the journey does not depend on physical distance, and many practitioners have worked remotely for decades. What changes is the practical side: you need a quiet room, a blanket, and no interruptions for the hour.

What if I do not feel anything during the retrieval?

That is common and it is not a failure. Some people feel heat, tears or a jolt. Others feel nothing at all and notice the change in the following days, usually as sleep, energy or a return of appetite for life.

Can you lose a power animal again?

A power animal can withdraw if the relationship is neglected for a long time, and this is not a punishment. It is more like a friendship that fades from lack of contact. Brief daily attention is enough to keep it.

Is a power animal the same as a spirit guide?

Not quite. A power animal works primarily with your vitality and protection and appears in animal form. A teacher or guide, often in human form, works with instruction and insight. Many people have both, and they do different jobs.

Can children have a power animal retrieval?

Traditionally yes, and in many cultures children were given an animal ally early. In practice a responsible practitioner will only work with a child with the full involvement of a parent, and will keep it simple and short.

What if the animal I receive frightens me?

Say so during the session. A genuine power animal may be startling, a predator or something you find unappealing, but it should never feel hostile. Fear that does not settle after a conversation about it is worth taking seriously, and a practitioner should be willing to look again.

If the signs in this article described something you recognise, a retrieval is a small and quite ordinary piece of work that often changes more than people expect. You can look at the available healing sessions and decide from a settled place rather than an urgent one.
