Shamanic drumming is the practice of using a steady, monotonous drumbeat — usually between four and seven beats per second — to shift consciousness into a trance state suitable for journeying. The mechanism has a name in the research literature: auditory driving, or brainwave entrainment. Your brain tends to fall into step with a rhythm it hears repeatedly, and at that particular tempo it moves toward theta, the same slow wave-band associated with deep meditation, hypnagogia and the moments before sleep.
That is the short version. What follows is what the studies actually found, where the evidence is thinner than practitioners like to admit, and what any of it means when you are sitting on the floor with a drum in your lap.
What is brainwave entrainment?
Brainwave entrainment is the tendency of neural oscillations to synchronise with an external rhythmic stimulus — a sound, a light, a touch. Play a steady beat, and populations of neurons begin firing in time with it. The effect is well documented and unremarkable; it is the same physics that makes you nod your head to music without deciding to.
What matters for shamanic practice is which tempo produces which state. Human brainwaves are conventionally sorted into bands:

What does the research on shamanic drumming actually show?
The evidence is real but modest: small studies, mostly with few participants, consistently finding measurable shifts in brain activity and subjective experience during drumming — but rarely large enough or replicated enough to settle anything definitively.
The foundational work is Andrew Neher’s research in the early 1960s, which demonstrated that rhythmic drumming produced measurable EEG changes and altered subjective states in laboratory conditions. Neher’s studies were small and have been criticised for over-generalising from lab conditions to ceremonial ones — a fair criticism — but they established that something physiological, not merely theatrical, was happening.
Melinda Maxfield’s doctoral research in the 1990s narrowed the finding: participants listening to a steady beat of roughly 4.5 beats per second for 13 to 15 minutes showed brain activity synchronising to that rhythm, accompanied by imagery and altered time perception. Fifteen minutes is worth noting — it is roughly how long a traditional journey drumming session runs, which suggests practitioners worked out the dose empirically long before anyone measured it.
More recent neuroimaging work has found unusual patterns during the shamanic state of consciousness that don’t map neatly onto ordinary meditation: changes in gamma-band signal diversity, shifts in beta-band metastability, and unusual coherence between the two hemispheres. Research from the University of Michigan’s Center for Consciousness Science has found that journeying can produce experiences of unity, ego dissolution and insight at intensities comparable to other altered states.
Why does the drum work better than silence?
The drum gives the analytical mind something to do. In silent meditation, the part of you that narrates and plans has no occupation and generally fills the vacuum with itself. A monotonous beat occupies that channel — it is just interesting enough to hold attention and far too repetitive to think about — leaving the imaginal faculties free to work.
This is the practical difference between shamanic journeying and meditation. Meditation quiets the inner world. Journeying travels through it, and the drum is the vehicle.
What I have noticed in practice
In my own sessions and trainings, the single most reliable predictor of whether someone reaches the journey state is not belief, talent or spiritual experience. It is whether the drum is loud enough and close enough.
People arrive having tried journeying at home with a recording playing quietly through a phone speaker on the other side of the room, and report that nothing happened. Nothing did happen — a thin sound at low volume across four metres of air does not entrain anything. Put headphones on the same person, or sit them a metre from a live frame drum, and the difference is usually immediate and slightly startling to them.
The second thing I notice: the first two or three minutes almost always feel like failure. The mind is loud, the beat is irritating, and people decide it isn’t working. Entrainment is not instant. The research timeframe of 13 to 15 minutes matches what I see — the shift, when it comes, tends to arrive somewhere after the fifth minute, often without the person noticing the transition until afterwards.

What the science does not say
Honesty matters more here than enthusiasm, so: the research shows that drumming reliably changes brain states. It does not show that the spirits you meet are external beings, that journeying diagnoses illness, or that drumming cures disease.
Claims that drumming “boosts the immune system” circulate widely and rest on a small number of studies with limited samples. There is reasonable evidence that group drumming reduces subjective stress and improves mood — which is a genuine and useful finding — but stretching that into medical claims does the practice no favours and invites justified scepticism.
What the neuroscience does is narrower and, to my mind, more interesting: it establishes that the journey state is a real, distinguishable physiological condition. Whatever meaning you make of what happens inside it remains yours to make.
How to use this practically
- Get the tempo right. Aim for roughly 4–7 beats per second — faster than feels natural at first. Count four beats per second against a clock once, and you will recalibrate permanently.
- Give it fifteen minutes. Not five. The early restlessness is part of the process, not evidence against it.
- Volume and proximity matter more than equipment. Headphones beat expensive speakers across a room. A live drum beats a recording.
- Keep the beat monotonous. Musical, varied drumming is beautiful and does not entrain. Boring is the point.
- Use a callback. A distinct change in rhythm at the end signals return, and prevents the disorientation of stopping abruptly.
