When the same animal keeps showing up in your life, it can be a message, but it is not always one. In shamanic practice a recurring animal is taken seriously when it appears in different places, at unusual moments and in more than one way, for example in a dream and then on your doorstep. If it only turns up where it lives anyway, in its season, it is usually just an animal going about its day.
So the honest answer has two parts. First you sort out what has an ordinary explanation. Then you work with what is left: you write it down, look at what the real animal does, and ask it in a journey.
What does it mean when the same animal keeps showing up?
From a shamanic point of view, an animal that keeps coming back is drawing your attention to a quality you need right now. It may be a helping spirit trying to make contact, or it may be pointing at something in your life that looks a lot like the way it behaves.
In shamanism every species is seen as having its own spirit, and that spirit can relate to a person. In The Way of the Shaman (1980), Michael Harner described power animals as guardian spirits that most people have had since childhood, usually without knowing it. Repetition matters, but on its own it proves nothing.
Is it always a sign? What to rule out first
No. Many repeated sightings have a plain explanation, and it is better to rule those out first. Once those are ruled out, what remains is worth your time.
- Habitat. If you moved near a river, you will see herons. That is where herons live. Ask yourself whether the animal is simply common where you are.
- Season. Many animals are easier to see at certain times of year. Swallows arrive in spring, and in Portugal cattle egrets follow the tractors when the fields are ploughed.
- Attention. Once something is on your mind, you notice it everywhere. The linguist Arnold Zwicky called this the frequency illusion in 2005. If you have just read about crows, you will spot more crows, even though there are no more of them than last month.
- Images, not animals. Seeing an owl on mugs, adverts and social media is different from meeting an owl. Your feed shows you more of what you already clicked on.
That means the animal that shows up where it does not usually go, at an odd hour, close to you, or at the exact moment you were thinking about a particular problem. Or the animal that turns up in your dreams and in waking life within the same few weeks.
Dreams, journeys and waking encounters: is there a difference?
Yes. Each carries a different kind of weight, so keep them apart in your notes.
A waking encounter is a real animal in the real world. It tells you most when the behaviour is unusual: a bird that lands next to you and stays, a deer that does not run. A dream animal often shows you something about your own inner state, and what it does in the dream matters more than which species it is. The guide on dreaming of animals goes into this in detail. In a shamanic journey you can actually talk to the animal and ask why it is there.
The strongest signal is when the same animal turns up in all three. A hawk in a dream, then a hawk sitting on a fence post on your way to work, then a hawk in your first journey: that is the kind of pattern shamanic practitioners pay attention to.
Where the animal shows up and what it can point to
Where and when the animal appears often says as much as the species itself. Use this table as a starting point for your own notes, not as a fixed rule.
| Where or how the animal shows up | What it can point to |
|---|---|
| On your path, crossing in front of you | A decision or a direction. Notice what you were thinking about at that moment |
| At your door, window or home | Something in your private life, your family or your sense of safety |
| At work or on your commute | How you handle effort, pressure or the people around you |
| In dreams, repeatedly | An inner process that is asking for attention, often a feeling you push away during the day |
| Dead or injured | Often an ending, or something in you that is exhausted. It is not automatically a bad omen |
| In a journey, without being called | Possible contact from a helping spirit. Ask it directly whether it is your power animal |
| In many forms at once (images, words, real animals) | First check for attention bias. If real encounters are part of it, keep notes for a month |
How do you work with an animal that keeps showing up?
You work with it in four steps: notice and note, look at the real animal, ask it in a journey, and honour it. This takes a few weeks, not an afternoon.
- Notice and note. Each time it appears, write down the date, the place, the time of day, what the animal did, and what you were thinking or feeling just before. After three or four entries you often see a pattern you would never have spotted from memory.
- Look at the real animal. Read how it lives, feeds and deals with danger. In shamanic work, the way the animal lives in nature is the first clue to its medicine. A heron standing still for an hour is teaching something different from a crow working out a puzzle.
- Ask it in a journey. Travel to the Lower World with a steady drumbeat and ask three simple questions: Why are you showing up? What do you want me to see? Are you my power animal? Write down the answer straight after, even if it seems small or strange. If you have never journeyed before, the free spirit animal journey is an 18-minute guided drum journey to start with.
- Honour it. When an animal has given you something, you give something back. Learn more about it, support its habitat, or move the way it moves for a few minutes. There are more ideas in how to honor your spirit animal.
Is a recurring animal the same as your power animal?
Not necessarily. A recurring animal is one that keeps getting your attention. A power animal is a helping spirit you are in a lasting relationship with, one that protects you and lends you its strength over years.
Many recurring animals come for one stretch of time, such as a move, a loss or a hard decision, and appear less once it is over. A power animal tends to stay. For the difference between the two terms, read power animal vs spirit animal.
| Recurring animal | Power animal | |
|---|---|---|
| How it shows up | Mostly in waking life, sometimes in dreams | In journeys, dreams and waking life over a long time |
| How long it stays | Weeks or months, often linked to one situation | Years, sometimes a lifetime |
| What it does | Draws your attention to something | Protects you and lends you its strength |
| How you find out | By noticing and taking notes | By meeting it in a journey and asking |
When might the recurring animal be your power animal?
It may be your power animal if it appears in a journey without you calling it, and if you have been close to it for much longer than the current sightings. Often the bond goes back to childhood.
- It comes to you in a shamanic journey without being called, and more than once
- You had a strong bond with this animal as a child, long before any of this started
- Its way of living feels familiar, including the parts you find difficult
- You feel steadier after contact with it, not more excited or anxious
- It keeps appearing across very different situations in your life, not only one
If several of these fit, journey and ask. If you would like someone experienced to journey for you, the Power Animal Finder is a personal reading: I journey on your behalf and send you your animal, an illustration and a journal within two to three days.
What I notice in my own practice
One of the questions I hear most often is some version of: I keep seeing this animal, what does it mean? Most people want one clear meaning they can look up, and in my experience that is the least useful place to start.
What helps far more is the notebook. People who write down a month of sightings usually come back with their own answer, and it is more specific than anything a list could give them.
And if the recurring animal is part of a time when you feel anxious or low, take that seriously in its own right. Shamanic work can support you alongside medical or therapeutic help, but it does not replace it.
Frequently asked questions about the same animal showing up
Not in itself. Even animals with a dark reputation, like crows or snakes, usually point to change or protection in shamanic work rather than danger. The animal is asking you to look at something. What it is depends on what is happening in your life at the time.
A recurring dream animal often shows an inner process that wants attention, usually a feeling you push away during the day. Pay attention to what the animal does in the dream and how you feel when you wake up. If it also appears in waking life, the pattern is stronger.
There is no fixed number. In core shamanism as Michael Harner taught it, an animal that shows itself to you four times in one journey is taken as a sign that it has come to you. In waking life, look for repeated encounters in unusual places or at unusual moments rather than counting sightings.
Start a simple notebook. Write down where, when, what the animal did and what you were thinking at the time. After a few weeks, journey to ask it directly why it is there.
