The Foundation

What Spirit Animals Are

Spirit animals — also called power animals, animal totems, or animal guides — are helping spirits in animal form. They appear in shamanic traditions on every continent, because the bond between humans and animals is one of our oldest spiritual abilities. A spirit animal offers you its medicine: the bear its strength and rest, the owl its clear sight, the hummingbird its joy. In meeting them, you meet a part of yourself.

Your Power Animal

Your personal, lifelong ally — traditionally met in a drum journey to the Lower World. It protects you, lends you power, and walks beside you through everything.

Animal Guides & Messengers

Other animals come for a season: appearing in dreams, crossing your path again and again, carrying a message for exactly this chapter of your life.

A Universal Language

From Siberia to the Americas, cultures everywhere have honored animal spirits. The names differ — totem, ally, guide — the living relationship is the same.

Three Doorways

How to Discover Yours

1

Listen to Your Life

Which animal has always fascinated you? Which one keeps appearing — in dreams, in nature, in art that stops you? Spirit animals often announce themselves long before we go looking. Start by simply noticing.

2

Take the Guided Path

The Power Animal Finder guides you through reflective questions toward the animals whose medicine resonates with your life right now — a beautiful, gentle first step. Then meet your matches in the A–Z Spirit Animal Guide.

3

Meet Them in a Journey

The classic shamanic way: a drum journey to the Lower World, where your power animal meets you personally. This is where the relationship becomes alive — and it's the very first thing I teach in Module 1 of the Elements training. New to journeying? Here's how it works.

A Living Relationship

More Than a Symbol — a Friendship

A spirit animal is a relationship, and relationships grow through attention. Visit your power animal in short, regular journeys. Thank it. Ask it your real questions. Learn how the living animal moves through the world — and let its medicine inspire how you move through yours. Over the years, this friendship becomes one of the steadiest sources of guidance you will ever know.

FAQ

Spirit Animals — Good to Know

What is a spirit animal?
A helping spirit in animal form — also called a power animal, animal totem, or animal guide — offering guidance, protection, and wisdom. The practice is found in shamanic traditions across the world and bridges the natural world and the deeper layers of your own soul.
Spirit animal, power animal, totem — what's the difference?
The terms overlap. In shamanic practice, a power animal is your personal, lifelong ally, usually met in a journey to the Lower World. Spirit animals in the wider sense also include animals that come for a season — in dreams, in nature, as messengers for a chapter of your life.
How do I find my spirit animal?
Three doorways: notice which animals keep appearing in your life and dreams; take the Power Animal Finder for a guided discovery; or meet your power animal directly in a drum journey — the classic shamanic way, and the most personal one.
Can my spirit animal change over time?
Yes. Many people have one lifelong power animal and other guides who come for a season — supporting a specific phase, healing, or lesson — and then gently step back. Both kinds of relationship are precious.
How do I work with my spirit animal in daily life?
Through attention: regular short journeys, gratitude, real questions, learning about the living animal in nature — and daily doorways like the Path of the Paws oracle cards. Relationship grows the way all friendships do: by showing up.
